Kilmainham Gaol & Museum
Use
The LUAS Red Line tram, from The Central Bus Station, 2 minutes away
from The Anchor Guesthouse, to reach Kilmainham Gaol & Museum.
Kilmainham Gaol first locked its doors in 1789. Kilmainham
Gaol finally re-opened its doors in 1924, when the new Irish Government
closed the Gaol. Kilmainham Gaol was abandoned
the for a number of years. Restoration works commenced in the
1960's. Kilmainham Gaol could not be forgotten by the Irish soul,
because of all of those brave patriots who were imprisoned
there throughout the ages, but especially those who were
imprisoned, tried, & put
to death at Kilmainham Gaol for their struggle during The Easter
Rising of 1916. It is through the ultimate sacrifice that these 1916
patriots made in the yard of Kilmainham Gaol, that the Irish
people finally achieved their freedom.
The
only way to view the gaol is by a guided tour. It is a very
informative tour, and is a a "must do" for those who are in any way
interested in the history of Ireland. It tends to be a memorable
experience, for most who tour the former Gaol.
Use The Luas Tram to Heuston
Train Station or to St. Jame's Hospital, Stop 7 or 8 below. It is best to get
off at top 8, St. Jame's Hospital, & to also visit The Guinness
Storehouse, or
get off at Stop 7 & visit
both Dublin Zoo & Kilmainham Gaol together.
You may choose to
use Dublin bus # 51B, 78A, or 79 from Burgh Quay to reach Kilmainham
Gaol.
