The
Garden of Remembrance
The
Garden of Remembrance is a very peaceful special place.
It is
dedicated to the memory of all of those who died in the pursuit of
Ireland's freedom.
It is situated on the
actual ground where several of the volunteer soldiers of the 1916
Easter Rising were held, following their surrender to the British
forces from The burning GPO on O' Connell Street. They were held
overnight here, and were then sent onwards to Kilmainham Gaol, where
most of the Leaders amongst them were shot .
A mosaic on the floor of
the pool shows broken swords, spears, & shields, all to
symbolise peace.
The sculpture at the top
of the stairs shows the "Children of Lir" who were turned into Swans
by their horrid stepmother.
It is
good to take a couple of moments of peace in a place such as The
Garden of Remembrance.
The
Garden of Remembrance is situated across the street from The Writers
Museum on Parnell Square. |
